I’ll tell you…

All of these moments have been major turning points in my life.  All seemed to have been decisions that I had made spontaneously, on a whim without enough forethought.

You often hear people saying that “if they knew then what they know now….” which usually implies that they would never have gone ahead.  But the very fact that we do go ahead is because deep down we know that no matter what lies ahead, it will ultimately be for the greater good.

I knew for years and years that I wanted to have children – in fact, I knew I wanted 2 children.  This has been the biggest challenge in my life as well as the most important and valued decision I have ever made.  I would be lying if I said it has been a breeze – quite the contrary.  I suffered with post natal depression after the birth of my daughter and separated from my ex husband when my daughter was 3 and my son was 1.  Hard work and discipline has been the order of the day and it has resulted in a beautiful family of 3! I love my children more than I ever believed possible and cannot begin to express my gratitude for these two precious lives.

Similarly, although many of my friends and family were surprised when I asked for a divorce, the thinking process leading up to the event had been going on in my mind for years.  In this instance I also never thought too deeply about how difficult the road ahead would be, but rather focused on the outcome.  Divorce can never be easy, and mine was painful and hard, but ranks as one of the best decisions I have made in my life.  I shudder to think what my life would be like had I been to fearful to take on this turning point.

With the 3 Weeks to Wonderful program, I had spent many months chastising myself for not being more active, for eating badly, and for getting so badly out of shape. I knew I wanted to do something, but I did not want to follow a trend or a fad.  I also had hundreds of excuses in my arsenal as to why I could not fit in more exercise or eat better.  After a rough 2013, I realised that I was losing my own identity to being angry and aggressive most of the time.  Suez’s timing was perfect – I saw her post about the launch of the program and knew it was the right time to make my decision.  My head was ready to take it on and I knew the outcome would be worth it.  I also knew that while the program was just a kick in the right direction, it would create habits for me to carry forward into every day life.

If I had given too much thought to costs, time constraints, difficulty etc. I probably would not have committed.  As it turns out, I’ve made the time now for daily exercise and WANT to do it every day.  I have the occasional desire for chocolate or coffee or wine, but don’t feel like I am missing out on anything. Instead I really, really enjoy my salads and healthy foods.  I don’t even feel the need to snack anymore. When I am thirsty, I want water – nothing else (but wine would have gone down a treat last night :))

I do not look like Angelina Jolie, nor do I have Mother Theresa’s disposition, but I am fitting into my clothes far easier, do not snap and scream at every opportunity and generally feel content and positive about life. Not to mention I have achieved my goal of starting to run (I’ve always told myself I could never run distance).

I feel good about where Suez has brought us on this journey and I am grateful for the support and motivation from Suez, the other amazing ladies on the program as well as family and friends here.  If anyone reading this post is undecided about whether or not to take the leap – be like Nike and Just Do IT!  The rewards are far greater than you can imagine.

Day 16 on 3 Weeks to Wonderful

Well I thought I would sleep like a log last night, but my son was not well and had a raging fever during the night, so there were a few disturbances.

Nonetheless I feel rested in the morning.  I’m grateful that I had prepped my rolled oats convenience breakfast last night as there is no time to prep this morning.

I make a call to leave my son in bed to shake off his cold and drop my daughter at school.

Again, the morning goes by in a flash.  I eat the rolled oats at around 9:30 and then for lunch have two pieces of salmon fashion sandwich and two boiled eggs.  Bland, but good.

Something I realise I have not mentioned too much in my previous posts is the reach that this program has had.  The number of people who have told me that they have been inspired by my Facebook posts (and this blog) is amazing.  Each day somebody will comment on how well I am looking and we chat about the program.  People work out very quickly that this is not a fad or a diet – and that is key!  There is a great balance of healthy awareness of what we are putting into our bodies, together with simple, but effective exercises.  While discipline is a key component and needed in large doses, the program itself is not difficult.

I decide to take a rest day from all exercise as I am swamped with work issues and other issues in the housing complex I live in.  A neighbour needs help with her computer and the day spirals out of control.  I rush in eventually to make dinner of Burgers and sweet potato wedges, which goes down well as usual.  Amazing just how filling this dinner is.

I really, really want a glass of wine tonight, so I fill my wine glass with ice and water – sit back and enjoy…

Day 15 on 3 Weeks to Wonderful

I’m not used to the start of the work week being such a positive experience!  I actually don’t mind getting out of bed early.  This morning I wake up early to make the family egg and bacon as a good start to the week.  There’s loads of gratitude!

I find a pair of pants this morning that I had meant to return as I had bought them in a rush in December (without trying on) and realised when I got home that I battled to get them over my hips.  I put them on this morning and they are loose!  What an amazing feeling.

Traffic is horrific and has me arriving late at the office, but unphased.  The aliens have surely invaded this body – this slightly reduced body.

Morning meetings come and go and lunch time arrives without me once having thought about food, hunger, coffee.  I eat my leftover coconut chicken for lunch. which fuels me up for the rest of a busy day.

After fetching kids, catching up work, resolving some issues that have arisen in our housing complex, I finally get out for my ‘run’. That’s a bit rich – it is more like a 4Km plod along.  My mind is just not in the right place and I run every step with a grimace and feel like I am towing a ten ton truck behind me.  So not the easiest run I have had, but I persevere and do the distance.

I make the kids one of their favourite dinners of lamb chops and mash, and I eat 4 pieces of salmon sushi with a lovely salad.

My bed is a welcome sight tonight and I feel I have earned my rest…


Day 14 on 3 Weeks to Wonderful

Woke to a beautiful, fresh Sunday morning.  Bike packed in back of car, water storage filled.  Grabbed a handful of blueberries and almonds and headed out to “The Cradle of Humankind” where rides are long and steep.

I have to confess to almost not heading out as the sky looked so threatening, but decided that I had come all the way I may as well see it through.  After a 2 hour loop, I finally made it back to my car feeling a little wobbly on my legs.  It was a great ride, but tough.  Today I managed to spot the white tiger as well as 3 rhino and a barn owl.  I did not stop to take pictures because I knew how hard it would be to continue after stopping.

I made myself some scrambled egg when I got home and then set off to fetch children and get them sorted out for lunch.  For lunch, I had 6 delicious pieces of salmon sashimi as well as some “vampire juice” which comprises of a healthy handful of spinach, 1 beetroot, 1 carrot, 1 nob of ginger and a slice of pineapple mixed with a little almond milk. I then went to meet a friend who has been away for the past 6 months.  Was fantastic to catch up with her and we enjoyed copious glasses of water and lemon.  She has found a bootcamp in Australia, where she will be staying until the end of April. She was impressed with how well and “skinny” I am looking. (sidenote:  I’m far from skinny but this is her way of saying I have lost some weight!)

We had the family favourite, coconut chicken for dinner, but my son has said that he is getting tired of it now 🙂 My daughter and I still really enjoy it.

Tomorrow begins our final week on the program and….I feel a little sad! This has been such a great experience and I have felt so motivated and positive.  The comforting thought is that it is a simple choice to maintain, it never really ends!

Day 13 on 3 Weeks to Wonderful

So I did another great run yesterday and then cooled down walking my beautiful dog.  Felt great.

I was so pleasantly surprised last night when the teenage girls saw me making salad and asked if they could skip the pizza order and rather join me with the salad.  Yay! to healthy choices happening spontaneously 🙂

Anyway, go a good night’s sleep and up early this morning to get the girls to horse riding.  Made scrambled eggs with chilli and two rashers of bacon, which was delicious.  I decided to have another lazy Saturday as it was officially a “day off” for me.  My son being away at school camp and my daughter sleeping at a friend’s house.  It doesn’t happen often, so I wanted to take full advantage.  After getting shopping out of the way and a bit of cleaning, I was able to plonk down in front of the telly for the afternoon.

I did have the allotted 2 squares of dark choc, which was not quite as heavenly as I had expected.

For dinner I made a lovely green salad and a piece of steak.  Delicious and just the right amount of food.  Spent a bit of time preparing for my cycle in the morning.  Another great feel-good day (but no exercise!!)

Day 12 on 3 Weeks to Wonderful

It’s Friday! How did that happen so quickly?

The usual warm water and lemon kickstarted the day, followed by the same rolled oats as I had yesterday for breakfast. A bit later in the morning I had a boiled egg and nibbled on a few almonds.

I thoroughly enjoyed my leftover curry and cauliflower rice for lunch.  I was working on a pretty routine work exercise and found myself wanting a snack.  Chocolates and coffee were coming to mind, so I made a juice of spinach, beetroot, ginger, carrot, lime and an apple.  It looked pretty gross but tasted good and helped me to finish off my work.

Today I had a few people say that they could see I had lost weight (I still don’t see it) and I was also told that I am looking younger and fresher – so a big Yay! to that.

Tonight my daughter has a friend sleeping over and they want to join me for a delicious salad but they also want pizza!  I’m going to be adding some bits of bacon into my salad tonight.

I still have to do Suez’s 8 minute exercise routine and go for a run when it is a bit cooler. Have been thinking how nice it would be to nibble on some popcorn while watching a movie tonight.  Missing coffee and could do with a chocolate – but these are not cravings just habit of bad choices at the weekend. Need to get more cycling training in…

Day 11 on 3 Weeks to Wonderful

Allowed myself a nice little sleep in this morning, and still felt great on waking.  Did a few stretches, but no high intensity exercise as I was still in awe of my awesome run from last night.  Previously I had only managed to run up to 3Km, but last night I did 4.2Km – a great achievement for me.  Lemon and water started the day, as usual!

At the office I ate apple/cinnamon rolled oats breakfast that I had mad last night.  Delicious as always.  I didn’t have the need to snack all morning and at lunch time I ate a lamb chop and a boiled egg.

I had to take my daughter to the doctor today and I bumped into the physiotherapist I had seen in early December last year.  She had no idea I was doing 3W2W, but immediately commented that I had lost a lot of weight.  Great to hear.  Strangely I still don’t think it is that noticeable, but maybe my expectations are a little high 🙂

I did Suez’s 8 minute workout and managed 10 reps this time around (2 more reps than my first attempt on Monday).  While 8 minutes sounds pathetically easy I can honestly say the sweat was pouring off me and I was breathless afterwards.  Went for a walk after, but didn’t do any other exercise today.

For dinner we tried something a little different to what is on Suez’s suggested menu (but obviously, with Suez’s prior consent).  I made a lean mince curry with cauliflower rice.  I got the cauliflower rice idea from The Real Meal Revolution and it was such a hit.  At first the kids looked really disgusted, but they loved it!

Basically, you throw some cauliflower into a blender and get it into a consistency similar to couscous.  Fry some chopped onion in a little coconut oil, then add the cauliflower and cook for about 6 mins (stirring occasionally).  You can add a blob of organic butter and a little salt.

Yay! leftovers for lunch tomorrow. Bliss!
